Common Mistakes Tulsa-Area Homeowners Make To Invite Cockroaches Inside

November 23, 2018

cockroach in tulsa home

When we think of creepy and disgusting, several things come to mind, but let’s be honest, cockroaches are pretty high on that list. To the level that even gameshows will design disgusting challenges around cockroaches, making contestants get into containers full of them, or going to the extent of challenging their participants to eat them, for money. We all cringe and shake (and maybe even enjoy this) when we see them on reality tv, but, it’s safe to say, no homeowner wants cockroaches to enter into their actual reality.

What Invites Cockroaches Inside?

Cockroaches are much like any other living creature, they need food, water, and shelter to survive. Limiting their access to these life essentials will, in turn, limit the number of cockroaches interested in invading your home.

Food

We all need food to survive; cockroaches are no different. Roaches will scavenge anywhere food is left out, mainly kitchens and dining areas. Eliminating these sources of food is the first step in deterring cockroaches. Before the lights go out at night allowing possible cockroaches a darkness to explore, wipe tables and countertops of any food crumbs (aka roach snacks). In the same way clean under appliances, inside doors, and anywhere else food may reside, hidden from the naked eye. When putting away food, store it in cockroach-proof, airtight containers. This is also true for pet food.

Water

Nothing draws cockroaches in faster than pools of stagnant water. Search your home for any sources of still water or leaks. Look for leaks around piping or bathroom fixtures and fix them. Don’t allow water to linger in pet bowls or plant pots and be careful not to leave out wet towels or clothing. Last, keep kitchen sponges as dry as possible and stored off the counter.

Shelter

At the end of the day, if cockroaches invade your home, then it becomes their shelter. This is why the best deterrence for cockroaches starts outside. Seal any cracks or gaps in your foundation using a caulking gun, install door sweeps under exterior doors, and make sure you have weather stripping installed on all entryways.
