Why Winter Mice Problems Shouldn’t Be Treated Alone
You hear them at night, scratching in your walls. You see their droppings littering your cabinets. You even saw one of the culprits itself, racing out of your kitchen and out of sight. When you have a problem with mice in your house, it can be quite disturbing and, if you are like most people, you want to get rid of them as quickly as possible. However, winter rodent problems shouldn’t be handled alone. Below we’ll discuss why and what to do instead.
Why DIY Mice Elimination Methods Don’t Work Well
Trying to get rid of mice on your own is often an exercise in futility. There are several reasons for this:
- Mice traps rarely work. Mice are cautious creatures. If you put a trap in the wrong place, they won’t approach it. If something smells out of the ordinary (for instance, the scent of the last mouse you caught is still on the trap), they won’t approach it. If they do approach it, they can sometimes get the bait without getting caught. Even if you do catch a mouse, there’s a good chance that a bunch more are still running around your house unharmed.
- Poison is dangerous. If you mishandle the poison you could endanger yourself. If you don’t place it in a proper place, you could endanger your family or pets. If the mice get into it, they could end up dying deep within your walls, leaving you with another problem later on when they begin to decompose.
- Mice are dangerous. They may look small and cute, but mice carry diseases and parasites. If feeling threatened, they’ll do what they need to in order to protect themselves, even if it means scratching or biting you in the process.
- Mice are rarely alone. If you have one mouse in your house, it’s unlikely that it’s the only one. Even if you’re successful at catching a couple, there’s a good chance you haven’t taken care of the whole problem.
